What's Taxable for Restaurants & Food Businesses

Prepared Food

Yes — prepared food and restaurant meals are taxable at the full 5.50% combined rate.

Grocery Food

Exempt from sales tax. Grocery food is exempt. Prepared food sold by restaurants is taxed at 8% (meals tax rate).

Alcohol

Subject to sales tax. Maine is a control state for spirits. A separate 8% meals tax applies to restaurant sales.

Vendor Discount

Maine does not currently offer a vendor discount for timely filing.
